How often should you actually wash your car?

Washing too rarely damages paint. So does washing too often, badly. The honest answer depends on where the car sleeps.

How often should you actually wash your car?
It depends on where it is parked

A car in a basement car park needs far less than one under a tree. Bird droppings and tree sap are acidic and will etch clear coat within days in the sun — those need removing immediately, not at the next scheduled wash.

A workable schedule

Covered parking: a proper wash every two weeks. Open parking: weekly. Near the coast or a construction site: weekly, with an underbody rinse monthly.

Why more is not always better

Every contact wash carries some risk of marring. Six careless washes a month will do more damage than two careful ones. If you are washing more often, it matters more that the method is right.

The in-between trick

For light dust between washes, a waterless detailer on a plush microfibre is safe — it encapsulates the dust so it lifts rather than drags. On anything heavier than light dust, do not. Wait for a proper wash.
